Ronda Rousey trainer says 50-50 she fights again

Ronda Rousey’s longtime trainer Edmond Tarverdyan believes there is a “50-50” chance the UFC star ever fights again. Rousey (12-2) has declined to address her fighting future since a one-sided knockout loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 last December. UFC president Dana White has stated he believes it’s unlikely she’ll fight again. Speaking to The MMA Hour on Monday, Tarverdyan admitted Rousey, 30, struggled with injuries in the later part of her career, but did not rule out a comeback. John Locher/AP Photo “It’s going to be her decision,”…

Kamaru Usman continues rise to the top with brutal knockout

After winning his last four UFC fights by judge’s decision, most fans would be forgiven for expecting more of the same from Kamaru Usman on Saturday night. However, Usman showed up to UFC Fight Night with other plans and produced vicious first round knockout against Sergio Moraes, which was exactly what the Nigerian Nightmare needed in order to remind match makers why deserves a top five (or at least top ten) opponent next. After walking out to the Octagon to a song by Nigerian musician Olamide, Usman showed his intent…

Luke Rockhold beats David Branch at UFC Fight Night in Pittsburgh

It has been a long time coming, but Luke Rockhold is finally back in the winner’s column. The former UFC middleweight champion defeated David Branch by TKO on Saturday night at UFC Fight Night in Pittsburgh. It was Rockhold’s first victory since he defeated Chris Weidman at UFC 194 in December 2015 to claim the belt. “I wanted to wait for my timing,” Rockhold said. “I felt if I got my bearings in the second round I would take control no matter where it goes.” Luke Rockhold’s win was his…

Daniel Cormier addresses championship reinstatement, Jon Jones’ failed tests

Daniel Cormier‘s head continued to spin on Friday, two days after the UFC officially reinstated him as its light heavyweight champion. During his two-year title reign, Cormier (19-1) repeatedly said he was an undisputed champion — even though he never technically took the belt from its previous owner, Jon Jones. Cormier said it wasn’t his fault Jones was ineligible to compete. And while Jones was sidelined for various reasons, Cormier won the vacant title in 2015 and defended it against dangerous opponents in Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Johnson. Under the…

UFC’s David Branch has overcome far greater obstacles than Luke Rockhold will ever present

According to oddsmakers, David Branch is about a 4-to-1 underdog against Luke Rockhold at UFC Fight Night this weekend in Pittsburgh. Those numbers would imply that Branch (21-3), who is riding an 11-fight win streak, has less than a 20 percent chance to win Saturday’s middleweight main event. It’s certainly worth mentioning, however, that Branch has already beaten far greater odds than that. “I’ve overcome all kinds of adversity that are set forth for people in impoverished situations growing up,” Branch told ESPN. “I was born into a situation that…

All things considered, most observers seemed relatively pleased with last month’s super-hyped boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor. But, of course, you can’t please everyone. It’s still a good week for Mike Perry. The UFC welterweight celebrates his birthday tomorrow, and he’s still co-headlining UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Pittsburgh. His hometown in Central Florida was affected by Hurricane Irma last weekend, but it wasn’t devastated. Gilbert Melendez admits he’s at the tail-end of his professional MMA career. Gilbert Melendez will take step back, mull future after ugly Stephens loss

Gilbert Melendez‘s heart earned him a lot of praise at UFC 215 last weekend — and he’s grateful for the support he’s received. He also never wants to be in this position again. At age 35, and coming off the worst loss of his 15-year career, Melendez (22-7) admits he has some soul searching ahead of him. He is one of the best lightweights of his generation, but now winless in his last four fights. Gilbert Melendez, fighting Jeremy Stephens at UFC 215 on Saturday, knows he’s in “the fourth…
